…ages with pagination Use REST chat.getThreadMessages on servers >= 8.8.0 and load a thread 50 replies at a time: the root plus the newest page on open, older pages as the user scrolls up. The thread parent stays hidden until the oldest page is loaded, and jumping to a reply that is not loaded yet loads the remaining pages first. Servers below 8.8.0 keep the DDP full load.

WalkthroughThread-message loading now uses paginated requests with REST support on newer servers and a DDP fallback on older servers. …thread-messages-rest
- One gated restApi.getThreadMessages: REST page (50, newest first) on 8.8.0+, DDP whole thread on older workspaces - Paging state scoped to the thread view: first page deduped, requests serialized, pages landing after the view closes are dropped - Thread Parent shown only once the oldest page is fetched and the Message Window holds the oldest stored Thread Message - Jumps inside a thread page only until the target and grow the thread window; scroll-to-index retry cap 20 -> 60 so deep targets land - REST _updatedAt (ISO string) compared with tsToMs so edits and reactions update stored records - Tests moved to __tests__/ and extended
…eply is held back - move the chat.getMessage parent request into the REST branch of getThreadMessages so servers below 8.8.0 send no extra request - read one thread message past the window so the parent shows when the thread holds exactly one window of replies, and stays hidden otherwise - retry the first page before a jump to the thread parent when it never loaded - size the window after the thread lookup so overlapping loads agree - rename loadMoreThreadMessages to loadOlderThreadMessages and trim redundant pagination tests, pinning request serialization instead

…ing past equal-timestamp targets A reply deleted between two page requests shifted the next offset past one older reply, which then never loaded. The pager now keeps the last total and, when it shrank, asks again from an offset moved back by the difference. A jump target sharing the oldest fetched timestamp counts as reached only once it is stored, so it can sit on either side of a page boundary.

The thread parent can be lost after a failed load (app/lib/methods/loadThreadMessages.ts). I confirmed this in the code.
- Since commit c00aae3 the parent is requested at the same time as the first page.
- If the parent request succeeds, fetchThreadParent sets pager.parentMissing = false straight away.
- If the page request or the save then fails, the catch block in fetchPage puts the old pager.state back but leaves
parentMissing as false. The parent was never saved, and nothing asks for it again until the thread is reopened. That
breaks the PR's promise that a failed parent request is retried on the next page load.
- Fix: move wantsParent above the try, and add if (wantsParent) pager.parentMissing = true; in the catch. That's one line
plus the move.
Possible fix:
const fetchPage = async (thread: IThreadLocation, pager: IThreadPager, requestedOffset: number): Promise<boolean> => {
const previous = pager.state;
const wantsParent = requestedOffset === 0 || pager.parentMissing;
try {
const parentRequest =
wantsParent && compareServerVersion(reduxStore.getState().server.version, 'greaterThanOrEqualTo', '8.8.0')
? fetchThreadParent(thread.tmid, pager)
: null;
const { messages, total, threadParent: pageParent, offset } = await requestPage(thread.tmid, requestedOffset, previous);
const threadParent = wantsParent ? (pageParent ?? (await (parentRequest ?? fetchThreadParent(thread.tmid, pager)))) : null;
if (pagination.get(thread.tmid) !== pager) {
return false;
}
const resumed = offset === 0 && previous?.total === total ? previous : undefined;
const loaded = Math.max(offset + messages.length, resumed?.loaded ?? 0);
const fullyPaged = !messages.length || loaded >= total;
const oldest = messages.at(-1);
pager.state = {
loaded,
total,
fullyPaged,
oldestTs: Math.min(oldest ? tsToMs(oldest.ts) : Infinity, resumed?.oldestTs ?? Infinity),
reachedOldest: !!previous?.reachedOldest || fullyPaged
};
await saveThreadMessages({ ...thread, threadParent, messages });
return messages.length > 0;
} catch (e) {
log(e);
pager.state = previous;
if (wantsParent) {
pager.parentMissing = true;
}
return false;
}
};

Proposed changes
Opening a thread makes servers log a deprecation warning: the
getThreadMessagesDDP method is deprecated and will be removed in 9.0.0 in favor ofGET /v1/chat.getThreadMessages.On servers >= 8.8.0 (the release that deprecates the method) the app now uses the endpoint and loads a thread 50 replies at a time instead of fetching it all in one call:
sort={"ts":-1}).chat.getMessageafter the first page; if that request fails it is requested again with the next page load.The endpoint differs from the method: it doesn't return the root message (fetched with
chat.getMessage), it returns{ messages, count, offset, total }instead of an array, it capscountby the server'sAPI_Upper_Count_Limit, and it doesn't mark the thread read (the app already callsreadThreadsseparately).Issue(s)

How to test or reproduce
Needs a server >= 8.8.0. Create a channel, post a message, and add 200 replies in its thread. Then open the thread in the app:
reply 001) is loaded.getThreadMessagesdeprecation warning, and showschat.getThreadMessagesandchat.getMessagerequests.Screens: the thread view (RoomView opened with a
tmid).Screenshots

Device testing (Android emulator)
Run on
319c7ad1a(Pixel 9 AVD, Android 16) against two workspaces, each with a 200-reply thread, after clearing the local workspace cache. Requests: 8.4.0 (below the 8.8.0 gate, so thegetThreadMessagesDDP method) from an app-side request log; 8.10.0 (REST) from the ngrok inspector. Timings are approximate. The later commit48fa65c17only changes the deleted-reply and equal-timestamp paths; on 8.10.0 it was re-checked on the emulator (paging is stilloffset0, 50, 100, 150, 200 without deletions; after deleting a loaded reply,offset50 was followed by 49, then 99, 149, 199). Later commits (the reconnect paging position, queued next-page requests, concurrent decryption, the parent retry, and the review refactors and test cleanup) are covered by unit tests and were not re-run on a device. Since that run the thread parent request is sent after the first page instead of alongside it, so the "Open the thread" row below describes the earlier, concurrent behavior.offset=0andchat.getMessagetogether; newest 50 shown, parent hiddenoffset50, 100, 150 once each; parent appears withreply 001offset=0; parent hidden until the topoffset0 and 50 fetched; lands (~6 s)offset50 and 100 fetched; lands (~7 s)offset50 to 200 once each (the thread held 202 messages); lands (~7.5 s)offsets, no gapsoffset50Not covered: the rate-limit (429) path and an encrypted (E2EE) thread.
Known limits of this approach:
total, replies were deleted since the previous page, so it is requested again from an earlier offset. The server has notscursor (chat.getThreadMessagesonly acceptstmid,count,offset,sortandaroundId), so a reply deleted between that check and the request can still be skipped, which the room's delta sync usually covers.chat.getMessageon servers below 8.8.0.chat.getMessage, because the DDP method returns nothing for it.The
readThreadsmigration is part of #7783 and this PR doesn't depend on it.Summary by CodeRabbit
