💡 Overview

This PR contains custom incoming/outgoing calls ringtone playback. Ringtone plays only while in RINING state and is stoped explicitly during join flow.

📝 Implementation notes

  • Added native module method to play and stop sound resource.
  • Added useRingtone hook which allows to automatically capture a call in RINGING state and play corresponding ringtone (incoming/outgoing call).
  • Added corresponding expo plugin to copy sound resources to required directories (based on existing callingx resource import implementation).
  • Updated globals call manager start method, so that any ringtone in playing state is stopped during join, right before setting up audio configuration.

🎫 Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/RN-431/call-ringtone-support

📑 Docs: https://github.com/GetStream/getstream.io/pull/560

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for playing and stopping looping call sounds on iOS and Android, with an option to play while the ringer is muted on Android.
    • Added a ringtone hook that plays configured incoming or outgoing sounds and avoids incoming playback when the system is handling the ringtone or another call is active.
    • Added Expo configuration options for bundling custom call sounds on each platform. Supported audio formats vary by platform.
    • Call sounds stop when a call’s audio session starts.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The React Native SDK adds call-sound asset bundling, native playback methods for Android and iOS, and ringtone selection through useRingtone. Call startup now stops sound playback before audio-session setup.

Changes

Call sound playback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Call-sound asset bundling
packages/react-native-sdk/expo-config-plugin/src/common/types.ts, packages/react-native-sdk/expo-config-plugin/src/withCallResources/*
Expo config accepts platform sound-file paths. Platform plugins validate and bundle the files, and the existing ringtone plugins delegate file handling to them.
Native playback and bridge
packages/react-native-sdk/src/modules/call-manager/native-module.d.ts, packages/react-native-sdk/android/src/main/java/com/streamvideo/reactnative/{callmanager/StreamInCallManagerModule.kt,util/SoundPlayer.kt}, packages/react-native-sdk/ios/StreamInCallManager.{m,swift}, packages/react-native-sdk/ios/SoundPlayer.swift
Android and iOS expose playSound and stopSound. Android supports resource names and URIs; iOS resolves bundle resources and plays them with a looping audio player. Both platforms stop playback during module cleanup.
Ringing-state sound selection
packages/react-native-sdk/src/hooks/{index.ts,useRingtone.ts}, packages/react-native-sdk/src/utils/internal/registerSDKGlobals.ts
useRingtone checks call state and system-ringing state when selecting incoming sounds. callManager.start stops sound before audio-session setup.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 444f8

Incoming ringtone behavior can become inconsistent across app-state changes, and configured sounds may delay cancellation. These material call-sound issues should be resolved before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 444f8

The change is primarily confined to sound playback within each consuming application. Android URI preparation can delay cancellation and call-audio cleanup, but no remotely exploitable input path was established. Playback ownership and interruption behavior also remain incompletely validated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: Android URI preparation is not cancellable through the shared player's stop path. playSound holds the player lock through synchronous prepare and stores the player only after starting it. A slow source therefore delays stop and invalidation cleanup, weakening failure containment at the ringing-to-call-audio transition. The locking behavior is observed; device-specific delay and externally controlled input reachability are unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated failure-containment scope is the shared player owned by a consuming application's native module, including hook instances using that player. The inspected path does not establish cross-tenant, cross-service or environment-wide exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A security attack path through URI playback would require influence over the host-supplied sound option or its resolved source. The inspected hook uses call state to trigger playback but takes the sound string from its options, not from call payload data. Remote attacker control was not established, so URI acceptance is not reported as a verified vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new JavaScript-to-native interface forwards sound options without an application-level URI allowlist on Android. Build-time asset validation does not constrain runtime URI inputs. The iOS bundle lookup provides a narrower resource-resolution boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Playback ownership is module-global rather than call-scoped: a later play replaces the current sound and any hook cleanup can stop that replacement. The API does not isolate concurrent hook owners, although incoming-call suppression reduces some competing playback.
  • inferred — The intended stop-before-audio-setup handoff is not completion-ordered on iOS. JavaScript invokes stop first, but SoundPlayer queues stopping on the main queue while call startup uses audioSessionQueue. No barrier between those queues is shown; transient overlap is possible, while its runtime effect remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a bounded, cancellable preparation lifecycle and a completion-aware stop-before-join handoff. Associate cleanup with a playback owner or generation so stale hook cleanup cannot stop a replacement. If broad Android URI support is unnecessary, restrict the runtime contract to intended resource schemes.

🟡 Minor · Re-evaluate the tracking state when the Callingx event arrives. · useRingtone.ts:43-59

packages/react-native-sdk/src/hooks/useRingtone.ts:43-59
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Re-evaluate the tracking state when the Callingx event arrives.

On Android, didDisplayIncomingCall is emitted after onRegistrationSuccess, so it can identify the transition. However, useRingtone currently has no listener, and EventManager.addListener only registers callbacks. It does not replay earlier events. The event can therefore occur before this hook subscribes, leaving the SDK ringtone active.

Keep the existing synchronous isCallTracked(cid) check, and add a listener that triggers a re-evaluation. Declare that listener effect before the ringtone effect so an event received between the two effects is also handled.

Suggested fix
-import { useEffect } from 'react';
+import { useEffect, useState } from 'react';

   const calls = useCalls();
+  const [callingxEventVersion, setCallingxEventVersion] = useState(0);
