How are self-intersecting polygons in `<geometry>` resolved?

Title says it all. I don't see anything in the spec addressing it.

FWIW the polygon model is adapted from the Simple Features model, by way of GeoJSON. I don't think GeoJSON said anything about self-intersections, but IIRC that is part of Simple features access validity considerations.
